Venturing outdoors in the wind
Dawidskraal is a shady picnic area in an old milkwood forest in Betty's Bay. There are a number of picnic tables and barbeque grids.
The site is almost entirely sheltered from the South-easter wind. A boardwalk leads from Dawidskraal to a long sandy beach favoured by fishermen.
Fairy Glen is a tranquil picnic site on the shores of the Palmiet River.
The Harold Porter National Botanical Garden is situated in Betty's Bay and the large number of trees & layout of the garden provides relative shelter from the wind, with complete shelter in Disa Kloof (gorge) and Leopard's Kloof.
The picnic area & most of the bathing areas are almost entirely sheltered from wind. There are toilets and barbeque facilities and a number of hikes and walks start here. A small entrance fee is charged during the peak summer season.
Jock's Bay beach in Betty's Bay is sheltered from North Westerly winds which makes it an all time favourite for sunny winter days.
Pringle Bay beach might be a bad idea on a windy day, but a short stroll in an easterly direction will provide a protected bay known as the 'nursery'. Head over the little rocks and take a seat on the beach with a semented wall behind your back - you will not feel the South-East wind.
Visit the Library
There are two libraries in the area, situated in Betty's Bay and Kleinmond. Apart from providing reading matter, puzzles may be borrowed. Books and greeting cards are also for sale.
Betty's Bay Library is situated at the municipal buildings on Clarence Drive. Library hours are Monday, Wednesday & Friday: 14h00 to 16h00, Tuesday: 10h00 to 12h00 and Thursday: 10h00 to 11h00.
Kleinmond Library is situated on 5th Avenue.
Visit a museum in the Overberg
- The Shipwreck museum in Bredasdorp,the only museum of its kind on the African continent, houses a collection of artefacts salvaged from ships that have sunk in waters nearby. The southernmost coastline of the continent has had an estimated 250 vessels lost in this 'graveyard of ships' . Scale models of shipwrecks, furniture, figureheads and much more can be viewed.
Genadendal Museum and the mission villages of Genadendal and Elim with their quaint original architecture is a must to visit. The genealogy of Genadendal's inhabitants showing European, Khoi and slave roots are on exhibit. Other displays include early Moravian church history and antique musical instruments
The Old Harbour of Hermanus was proclaimed a museum in 1972. The Museum consists of the Historical Old Fishing Harbour and a Fishermen's Village. The open-air section of the museum is open 24 hours a day with displays of old boats, parts of the old sea wall, brine tanks and more. the indoor museum houses exhibitions on natural history. A prominent feature is the displays on whales and whaling, depicting especially the Southern Right Whales that visit our parts of the world anually from May to December.
