Beaches of the Overstrand Villages

White powdery beaches connected by a network of footpaths winding through Cape Fynbos passing rivers & marchland, rugged rock formations hugging the ocean, always filled with breathtaking views. The coastal villages of the Overberg offer some of the most magnificant beaching and land based whale watching experiences in the world.

Kleinmond - The beach at Sandown Bay is wide and vast with a dunefield streching around to the bay at Hawston. This beach provides excellent walks. The section closest to the parking/ recreational area is also known as Kleinmond Main Beach.

Awarded blue flag status for the 2010/11 season, Kleinmond beach is by far the busiest of all the beaches in the area. Lifeguards are on duty during the high season in summer, but swimming requires care - a sandbar often develops in the bay wich can create a channel with strong currents.The Kleinmond lagoon offers safe swimming and is popular with the kids. There is a large picnic area next to the lagoon with a children's playground. Small boats can be hired to paddle around the lagoon during summer. Surfing is often great near the point.

Palmiet Beach is less crowded than Kleinmond beach and is a favourite spot for angling from the rocks.
Swimming is NOT safe at Palmiet beach, but is excellent at the estuary of the Palmiet River.
Be careful of deep holes near the outflow to the sea. Across the river the West Bank offers a network of paths and a coastal walk.

Betty's Bay - Main Beach is the most popular with holiday makers in Betty's Bay and offers an expansive sandy beach. Bathing is relatively safe and the beach is favoured by surfers and anglers.

Silversands Beach is another popular beach with lots of white sand leading to the dunes located at the Western part of the beach. A much loved sandboarding & kite surfing venue. The lovely rock pools that form during lowtide at Tom se Klip is the ideal place for parents with toddlers. Fishing is good from the rocks at both ends of the beach. The area near the point is favoured by surfers.

Jock's Bay is a small & secluded little bay reached from Cliff Road near Harold Porter National Botanical Gardens. There is a fisherman's path leading to the beach. The bay provides protection against the breaking surf and allows for very safe & pleasant swimming.

Pringle Bay - Another magnificant powdery beach. Bathing is relatively safe. The beach is popular with surfers. The 'nursery area' to the left of the beach offers shore divers safe entry as the water is almost always calm in the protected bay. This little bay also offers safe swimming for children.

Rooi Els - The beach is accessed from outside the village of RooiEls. Parking is provided for a couple of cars on the R44 leading to the town. One can have long walks on the beach and may be rewarded with sightings of the Cape Clawless Otter or Chacma Baboons.
